7 teas that burn fat, boost the metabolism and help to lose water retention
I am an avid tea drinker. Sure, many teas have been shown to melt off fat, boost the metabolism and help to lose water retention, but I’ve been drinking tea long before any of this was even an issue for me. But since I started writing about fitness and clean eating, I’ve come across the benefits of tea to lose weight, so why not share them with you!?
Many studies have shown that some teas have the ability to really rev up the metabolism and increase fat burn by up to 10% naturally, without any added exercise or diet. (Though let’s be clear here – there is no better way of losing weight than just that – diet and exercise!) Some teas are also great at helping lose water retention, which often make us feel really fat! And best of all, many teas have some serious health benefits so if anything, they’ll keep us not only slimmer but healthier too!
So I’ve put together a list of 7 teas that burn fat, boost the metabolism and help lose water retention!
Let’s check them out! 👇
1) Green tea for weight loss
Green tea is one of the best teas for weight loss, since it is packed with catechins, antioxidant substances that improve the body’s ability to burn fat and have a nice anti-aging effect as a bonus. The tannins in the tea help to drop LDL (bad colesterol) levels and prevent heart illnesses.
The flavonoids, another antioxidant substance, fight free radicals that may cause cancer, which means that green tea also helps to prevent cancer!
It is also rich in manganese, potassium, folic acid, vitamins C, K, B1 and B2, plus it’s a diuretic, which means it helps to lose water retention. Sipping on that green tea yet?
The recommended daily dose is 4 cups a day – I prepare a large pitcher using organic loose leaves in the morning and drink a cup with every meal. I don’t EVER sweeten it (because who would want to ruin its magic powers with sugar or artificial sweeteners?) and it’s delicious hot and cold.
2) White tea to burn fat storages
White tea comes from the same plant as green tea, Camellia sinensis, but white tea is prepared from younger leaves. It has been found that white tea blocks the formation of new fat cells while, at the same time, boosting lipolysis, which is body’s process of breaking down stored fat. Double fat blaster!
Plus, like green tea, white tea is a rich source of catechins, an antioxidant that triggers the release of fat from the cells. Drink white tea and watch that fat burn!
White tea has a more delicate, sweeter taste than green tea and is usually blended with other leaves or fruits.
3) Hibiscus tea to lose water retention
Hibiscus tea is made from the dried calyces of the hibiscus flower, and it not only has powerful antioxidants, but it has diuretic, digestive and calming properties as well.
Hibiscus tea also has phaseolamine, a natural substance that inhibits the action of the enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates, which prevents the absorption of carbs and helps to lose weight.
Hibiscus tea works best for weight loss when consumed right before or after meals. It has a deep red color and a taste that resembles that of cranberry juice. Yum!
4) Ginger tea to boost the metabolism
Ginger isn’t technically a tea, but a rhizome that is widely used for its medicinal properties. Ginger tea is anti-bacterial, antioxidant and an aphrodisiac (score! 😏), plus it stimulates circulation and speeds up the metabolism. And a faster metabolism means fat burn and weightloss!
Ginger is also great for fighting colds, coughs and even hangovers. I buy it fresh and throw a slice into hot water. It’s slightly spicy but thoroughly delish!
5) Cardamon tea to burn more calories
Cardamon is related to ginger and has some similar health benefits. It is anti-inflammatory and is the go-to tea if you have a sore throat. But cardamon tea also helps to lose weight by boosting the metabolism and helping the body to burn more calories in a rested state.
Cardamon has a slightly spicy taste and is best when bought whole and dry. Take one grain, open it with a knife and infuse the seeds inside with hot water.
6) Cinnamon tea to prevent spikes in blood sugar
Besides being absolutely delicious, cinnamon reduces blood sugar levels which helps to lose weight by preventing spikes in insulin production. Cinnamon also reduces LDL (bad cholesterol) and helps prevent heart disease.
I like to buy both powdered cinnamon and in sticks, and both are great to add to teas. Sticks provide a more subtle cinnamon taste.
7) Guarana tea as a thermogenic
Guaraná is a fruit found in the Brazilian rainforest, and the dried powdered version is widely used for its stimulating effects: it increases energy and resistance during exercise and reduces muscular fatigue, so it is really great for people who work out. It is also a natural thermogenic, which means it helps your body to burn more fat during exercise.
I add a sprinkle to my pre-workout tea or even to my morning tea – it’s a real energy booster! s
So, I guess you guys can tell I’m totally the crazy tea lady, right? But I love the effects of teas on the body, and I really recommend adding teas that burn fat, boost the metabolism and help to lose water retention to your daily routines!
